 Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Heritage High School located?
Heritage is located south of Denver, two miles north of C470 between Broadway and Sante Fe. You can get to the school from Broadway by turning west onto either Ridge Road or Fremont and going to Elati Street where you turn left and proceed to West Geddes Avenue where you turn right. Follow Geddes until you come to either Gallup Street or the student parking lot.

From South Sante Fe, you can turn east at Mineral Avenue and make a left-hand turn (north) at Jackass Hill Road. Follow this road to the top of the hill and turn right at Rangeview. Continue down Rangeview through the four-way stop sign to the Heritage student parking lot.

You can get more specific driving instructions by going to Yahoo Maps.

How can I contact someone at Heritage?

You can also call teachers or staff members directly by using their departmental numbers or voice mail numbers.  To get a listing of these numbers, go to the Staff Directory page. Students are encouraged to meet with their teachers during unscheduled periods. What school supplies are needed?
School supply lists are not provided at Heritage over the summer months. If teachers require specific supplies for their classes, they will inform students during the first week of classes in the fall. Suggestions for general supplies to start the year include spiral notebooks with pockets, #2 pencils, and pens.

What should students do if they have a problem with their schedule?
The deadline for schedule corrections is noon on Monday, August 18, 2008.  Students can download the Schedule Correction Form from the website, or come to the main office and pick up a form.  Please refer to the guidelines in the August newsletter for valid reasons to make a schedule correction.  Counselors will not be available to meet with students individually - students must fill out the form.  Please note that a parent signature is required.

What should students do during their unscheduled periods?
Students are encouraged to spend unscheduled time in a productive manner meaning students are encouraged to meet with teachers, do homework, work with classmates or take care of other academic matters such as meeting with counselors, getting testing information or meeting with college representatives. Students can also go to the Student Center or relax around campus within departmental resource centers, in the library or outside on campus grounds.

Why do students need to have their student IDs with them at all times?
Students are asked to have their IDs with them for security reasons and for easy identification. Additionally, students need their student IDs to check out materials in the library and to use library computers. Students also need to show their student IDs in order to purchase away game tickets and to be allowed into HHS sporting events (provided they have purchased an activity ticket).

Where can I find directions to athletic events?
You can access a map of our league locations by going to the Directions and Maps link on the Home page. You can also go to http://www.chsaa.org and selecting the Directions to High Schools link to order to get written directions to all high schools in the state.

What does it cost to participate in a sport?
Cost is $100 per sport with a maxiumum of $200 maximum per athlete and $300 maximum per family per year.

Where does my $100 go to for athletic participation?
This money goes to into the district's general fund. It does not go into the sport's account.

Where can I pick up an Athletic Packet?
In the Main Office.

What sports are available at Heritage?

Does Heritage provide an activity bus in case I want to stay after school but don't have transportation home?
No. Activity buses are NOT provided to the high schools to cover after-school activities. Students must provide their own transportation.

How long do I have to excuse an absence?
It is required that parents notify the attendance office on or the day after the absence. An absence will remain unexcused if the attendance office has not been contacted by noon of the day after the absence. Friday absences need to be excused by noon on the following Monday.

The numbers to call are: (303) 347-7630 from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. After hours, parents may leave a message on the recorder at (303) 734-6700.

We do not accept notes to excuse absences, and we will only accept phone calls from parent / guardian(s) designated on the emergency card.

What are considered unexcused absences?
Unexcused absences are defined as:
1) Absences from a single class or multiple classes for reasons the school does not honor;
2) Absences that are reported outside of the prescribed time frame as explained above;
3) Absences that the parent and/or school did not grant permission for.

How do we set up a prearranged absence?
Absences for family vacations, hospitalizations, and college visitations that are a minimum of three days should be planned ahead of time and must be documented on a Pre-Arranged Absence form. You can pick up a blank form in the Attendance Office. Completed forms then need to be returned to the Attendance Office at least one week prior to the scheduled absence.

If two or more teachers indicate that the absence would be “inadvisable,” the absence will be considered unexcused unless approved by the administration. The Attendance Office will inform the assistant principal in charge of discipline if this is the case. He will then contact both the student and the parent.

How can a student be excused for an appointment?

If your student has an appointment that will cause him/her to miss class time the following procedures should be followed:
The day before the appointment, a parent/guardian should call the attendance office at 303-347-7630. Notes from parents are not accepted. If a message is left on the recorder the day of the appointment it may not be retrieved until after a student leaves, so it is important to call the day before.

If a student will be leaving during a class period, he/she should:
1. Pick up an excuse pass in the attendance office before school or during an off hour.
2. Give the pass to the appropriate teacher before class begins, so the teacher knows and the student can leave class without interrupting.
3. Check-out at the attendance office prior to leaving and check-in upon returning to school.
4. If the student will be leaving during a passing period or an off hour, he/she should check-in at the attendance office upon returning to school.

All students must check-in at the attendance office even if they return during an off hour. The attendance office will make a note of the time he/she returned, issuing a pass if necessary. If a student does not check-in upon returning to school he/she may be marked absent for the rest of the day.

What does it mean if LPS schools are on a Delayed Start/Storm Schedule?
This means that high schools and middle schools have regular bus pickup times and start times. The only schools that are impacted by the delayed start are elementaries. Elementary school bus pickup times and school start times will be delayed one-half hour. Please refer to the Emergency Closure Procedures Form for more specific details.
